I have attached an article from Runner's World about the Charleston Distance Run.
There is a lot of talk about changing the hilly 15 mile course to a flat 13.1 mile course.
I guess the problem is that not as many people are willing to do the 15 mile course and the thought is that the 13.1 mile flat course will bring the numbers back up.
The question is: Do you go to the 13.1 mile flat course to attract more runners or do you keep with the history of the 15 mile hilly course?

Keep it as a hilly 15 miler! That's what gives it character. Anything easier or shorter would be a real disappointment.

I love this race just as it is!!! My vote is to leave it be. It's so tough and challenging... But most of all, crazy fun!
They seem to be dead set on changing this to a flat half marathon from what I keep hearing. So...if they do change, then I think they should have 2 races. One in the Spring and the other in the Fall. One should be a 10K or 15K that includes the South Hills with Capital Punishment Hill included, of course. And the other could be the nice flat and fast Half Marathon with lots of running along both sides of the river. They could definitely pull this off...

I would like to see Charleston get some sort of half marathon event to allow locals to have an opportunity to gauge there half times with the rest of the running world. I say they should then do what is needed to allow it to be a qualifier for the boston or some other large marathons which are not open events. Change the distance run to the halfie and get komen folks to perserve the 15 miler by adding that as an option to their charity run. Just my two cents worth.

Keep it 15! the hills is what makes people come back year after year. I would probably not go there if it was just a flat 13.1...

Keep the race as is, but add a 13.1 flat course for those who choose not to tackle the hill.

I've never run it, but I think the course is unique and should remain the same. If Charlestonians want a pikermi (half-marathon) they can run either the Parkersburg or the Marshall one.

Keep it the 15! This will be my second year running it and I will continue if it remains the 15. They are thinking about changing it to bring in more runners but who is gonna come to Charleston, WV for the same old half marathon you could get anywhere else. I feel like changing it to "save" it would actually destroy it. This is such a different and great run. We the runners just need to get the word out more

Change it to the more popular half marathon!
Don't put up big dollars for the winners!
We must change with the times to stay fresh.

I'm for the tradition and tough course of the 15miler. When I say tradition I'm personally talking about a race that has had some of the best to ever run come and race CDR (Frank Shorter in his prime just to name the most obivous)
I do have a question for people that want it changed.
Why do you personally feel that the half marathon distance will greatly increase the numbers?
I know the response of comparing times, but there is many half marathons out there to run to compare times including the well established Parkersburg Half Marathon just 2 weeks earlier. I personally just don't see the numbers going up that much with the change.
I could see small increase but even that would be evened out when you take out all the runners that won't run it anymore since they came for the hilly 15miler and tradition of CDR.
Also total numbers are still over 1000 runners when you add in the 5K and relay. The days of 1000+ people showing up to Charleston, WV for any race is going to be hard to top with races in every town now.
Looks like a great topic that everyone has there own opinion on. Hopefully more total runners will come out this year and take part in CDR!

I think keep it the same with the hills and the distance. It makes the CDR unique.
I do think though it should be moved on the calendar. It was originally a cornerstone to the Charleston Regatta, which is pretty much non-existent.
Labor Day weekend is a busy weekend for lots of other activities, in addition to the end of a hot summer, making training for this kind of distance a challenge. Rather than changing the course, try moving the date. I think you'd get a lot more participation that way.

the Charleston Distance Run is America's 15 Miler. a new Race with a new distance and new course would not be the CDR.
IF members of the present Committee want to start a new Half Marathon (to compete with the many already established 13.1ers), have at it i say. but at the very lest, don't steal the name.

if the Charleston Only runners are unwilling to run any of the already available Half Marathons, and Race Timing technology being what it is today (times for more than just the Start and Finish), why couldn't the CDR Committee have a "chip strip" at the 13.1 mile mark?

Changing the CDR distance and course to make it more popular?
Remember New Coke?
Don't change it.
