Was diagosed Nov. 8 w/ the dreaded "stress frac". For past 7 weeks been going to PT and slowly working way back. 2 days ago started me on tread-2min walk 1min run, for a few cycles. Then got gung-ho on elliptical. Resulted in swelling, tenderness, and much frustration. Feeling back to square one. Like so many, I adore running,it's more than just a hobby, it's therapy. Is this slow process normal? Feel like I'll never heal. Anyone relate to the FRUSTRATION i'm exp? Words of wisdom appreciated, thank u.

Don't feel like you are all alone. I've been doing this for about five years now and at the end of November I developed a pain in my left foot after finishing a long run. It came on suddenly and without any warning signs. I rested for two weeks and it started feeling good again so I tried a run. I could only go one mile and it was painful after only about 1/4 mile. I went to the Dr. and he confirmed my fear that I had a stress fracture of the third metatarsal of the left foot.
This is new territory for me but I hope to resume running on Jan 26. In the meantime, I am working out on a stationary bicycle in order to maintain aerobic conditioning. A stationary bicycle workout incurs neither the weight bearing nor the impact effects of running so I feel that I am making good progress.
From what I understand through my reading, elliptical machine workouts do not incur the impact effects of running but they do have the weight bearing effects. I am certainly no expert, but I would expect that if your physician had cleared you for only a few cycles of treadmill walking/running, then only a few cycles of elliptical would be in order as well due to the weight bearing effects. I would not think that you would be ready to translate a few minutes on a treadmill to an hour on an elliptical.
That being said, you can and will overcome this. But, just curious, did you have a bone scan to confirm the stress fracture? And, how was the determination made that you were ready to resume activities? Also, did you physician give the OK for elliptical workouts?
Good luck!!!

Have you tried water walking? A lot of Ys and hospital based programs have at least a dip pool. Or biking might be lower impact. In my experience an eliptical is worse than a treadmill.
I came back from 2 knee proceedures on bike and gazelle starting at 2min working up to hour
